Interview with the eccentric and talented “Pezzettino”

Greetings Addicts!

We are back again with something a little different for your eyes and ears! We have with us this time the eccentric and talented “Pezzettino”. Just so you know…we don’t think she is eccentric, we think she is dope and is more of a character than what Milwaukee and the music industry is accustomed too. We saw her perform last year at the WAMI Awards in 2010 and were taken by surprise with her talent and theatrics. She has been all the way to New York and back getting people addicted to her unique personality. And did we mention, Pezzettino also plays the accordion! She also provided us with a biography so you can familiar with who she is!

—-BIO

Pezzettino is the project of Milwaukee-born, Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, Margaret Stutt. Though classically trained in piano as a child, Margaret left music to study Art History and Eastern Medicine. In 2008, she returned to music after a chance encounter with an accordion. She released her first solo demo album (Because I Have No Control…) that year, recorded solely on a USB microphone she purchased at RadioShack. Since then she has released two more full-length albums (Lion 2009, LubDub 2010) and a 7″ single (“You Never Know”), garnering regular radio rotation.  Margaret enjoys interdisciplinary arts, and has involved herself with theater and dance by adapting and performing music for theater productions such as A Midsummer’s Night Dream and Peter and the Wolf. Pezzettino tours the US solo and with a band, and she frequently interacts with fans by covering songs and making music videos for their requests.  Margaret is currently working onfull-length album, Spirit of Mercury, and an experimental Indie symphony/film, Pedestrian Drama.

—-INTERVIEW

1. What’s the first thing you would say to someone when they ask you to describe yourself as an artist?

“Mozart’s hip hop side project.” OR “Regina Spektor in a toaster.”  I’m most known for my irreverent, experimental use of the accordion.

2. How long have you been in the industry?

In 2008, I woke up, swiped the table clean. I hit the bottom and felt like I had nothing else to lose, so dove into music like life depended on it.  For the first time, I started putting songs to paper, songs that have always been floating around my head.  There was an article I read: “Why do you want to release music?  For your friends to hear?  To pursue a career? Are you willing to sacrifice EVERYTHING for music?  Unless you’re Britney Spears, music is not known for building up the 401k, and you have NO OPTION other than to grind yourself into the ground to make an inch of progress. You have to be willing to work til you BLEED, then go another fifty miles. If you can’t hang with that, then just burn a couple disks for your friends and play at open mic.” It was a decisive moment- I became committed to music and the industry as lifeblood.

3. How did you get started?

I was extremely shy. In first grade our class put on a musical and I was so excited by the music and idea of adopting a character’s persona that I hummed the tunes we learned that day until I got home and taught myself how to play them on the piano.  Music is my first language, I feel like words are a tough translation.  Ms. Margosian, the teacher, caught wind that I was teaching myself piano by ear each night after learning new songs in the musical, and she started having me perform the “adaptations” in front of the class each day before lessons. She was extremely supportive, and encouraged my parents to find a piano teacher. I studied classical music at a convent and became competitive… that’s the start I guess. My mom still runs into Ms. Margosian at the grocery store.

4. Where are you from originally?

Racine, Wisconsin. Heyoh!

5. Do you have any projects out now?

Yes! The latest album, “LubDub” is a collaboration with hip hop producer and multi-instrumentalist, LMNtlyst. We’re really excited about releasing it as a limited edition, clear yellow 12” and also digitally through Bandcamp.

6. What inspires your music?

Relationships. Love, Anger, Vulnerability, Frustration, Exhilaration, Depression, etc. Also The Struggle, making your own way, fighting for what you believe in, for yourself, for a way to be true to yourself.  LUST FOR LIFE!

7. What artists in the industry inspire you the most today? Why is that?

I look to intelligent, soulful artists that have independent spirit, industry savvy.  People who aren’t careless or just fucking around. On that roster are Sufjan Stevens, Bradford Cox, Bjork, Erykah Badu, CocoRosie, Joanna Newsom, St. Vincent, and Amanda Palmer. They exemplify a FEARLESSNESS that I’m always looking to cultivate in myself. Some of them I don’t even listen to their music all that much, but I respect them as artists and leaders, and am always interested in their chess moves.

8. What makes you different from other artists today?

Listen, I’m a Midwesterner and have that ingrained modesty that rebels against a question like this.  I’m following my own voice, and the ART reflects that individuality that can’t be found elsewhere.  That’s not me, it’s just the DNA that makes us all different.  I get the most feedback for the intensity and emotionalism in live performances.  The flexibility and dynamics in the music- wide range of emotions, styles).  My educational background, travel, weird family, experiences and choices.  These are the signature threads that inform and unify the music as it changes over time.  I take risks and follow the music as it forages through sonic landscapes and mediums.  The music, it’s life, it’s unpredictable but always identifiable.

9. What do you want your fans to know about you?

I poo.  You poo.  We all poo.

10. Where can we find your music at? Any websites?

11. Any shout outs you want to give?

To Milwaukee for giving me wings when I was lying on the pavement.  The fans for believing in me.  To open and warm hearts on the road for letting me crash on their couches.  Independent musicians everywhere.  BLOGGERS!  Brooklyn for starting to let me in…
